On May 20, 2016 at 12:19 hours, the Swoope Volunteer Fire Company 14 was dispatched to set up a Landing Zone (LZ) at Beverly Manor Middle School for the incoming Petroleum Helicopters International (PHI) Air Care 5 Unit that was inbound from Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport (SHD).
Staunton-Augusta Rescue Squad (SARS) and Swoope Volunteer Fire Company (SVFC) were originally dispatched for a traumatic injury for a subject who was struck in the head by a tree limb. Due to the extent of the injuries, air support was required to provide medical transport for this patient to the Level 1 trauma center at University of Virginia (UVA) in Charlottesville, Virginia. Air Care 5's primary mission is to transport while providing in-fight intensive care for critically ill or injured patients who require the specialized medical services of a Level 1 trauma center.
Deputy Chief Chris Botkin took Command and assigned Engine 14-2, Engine 14-5, and Tanker 14-7 to set up a safety perimeter around the school field for a LZ. Air Care 5 landed safely, while SARS and SVFC crews loaded patient into the helicopter. Air Care 5 lifted off and was en route to UVA for further treatment and evaluation of this patient.
Emergency Units responding: Engine 14-5, Engine 14-2, Tanker 14-7, SARS Ambulance and Air Care 5.
