On March 1, 2017 at 12:19 hours, while Swoope Volunteer was operating at a motor vehicle accident scene with a rollover, they were dispatched to an additional call in the district, just a few blocks away. Bad weather had rolled in very quickly with winds up to 70 miles per hour.
Brush 14-8 and Utility 14 were cleared from first incident to respond to the 600 block of Frog Pond Road for a report of a tree down. Brush 14-8 arrived for find two large trees over 40 feet had been brought down by heavy winds and ripped the electrical wires off the telephone pole in front of the residence. Firefighter Ben Piner assumed Command and investigated incident, advising road would be shut down due to large tree with wires blocking the roadway. Shenandoah Valley Power Group were called, and arrived on scene a short time later. The power to near by lines were de-activated and crews used chains saws to clear tree in road way.
The situation was brought under control within 35 minutes and Frog Pond Road was re-opened to traffic.
