On May 10, 2017 at 14:22 hours, the Swoope Volunteer Fire Company was dispatched for an Automobile Fire with "flames visible" on Route 262 at Morris Mill Road.
Engine 14-5 responded with three personnel and arrived to find an automobile on the southbound shoulder, fully involved with fire. Fire Chief Kevin L. Wilkes advised Augusta County Emergency Communications Center (AECC) the southbound lane of Route 262 would be shut down, and initiated Route 262 Command. Firefighter Harley Bird, a Virginia Tech student home on summer break, and Chief Wilkes donned Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBAs), deployed an inch an three-quarter hand-line and quickly knocked the fire down. Chief Wilkes placed situation under control and held units on scene until Virginia State Police arrived.
